Impact of Earthquaker Duration on Bridge Performance

Past long-duration earthquakes have shown the increased impact these earthquakes can have on the performance of bridge columns in comparison to short-duration earthquakes. Yet, most design codes do not consider earthquake duration. The presentation examines the impact of long-duration earthquake motions on conventionally designed concrete bridge columns, and columns designed to mitigate damage under large magnitude earthquakes. The experimental program included identical columns tested on a shake table using different motions from the Tohoku Earthquake, a long-duration subduction earthquake. Response is compared to an identical column previously tested with short-duration motions. The columns subjected to long- duration ground motions had reduced displacement capacity. A bridge designed and constructed using a new construction method was subjected to multiple earthquakes and showed the impact of strain history on column performance. Debonding of reinforcement was demonstrated as a way to reduce the impact of strain history. Analytical studies using OpenSees will also be presented.
